The volume brings together the speeches delivered and papers presented at an international brainstorming seminar on ‘ BRICS as a Global Alternative: Prospects and Concerns for India ’ held at Adamas University, Kolkata, on 22 and 23 February 2024. Primarily sponsored by the Indian Council of World Affairs and supported by Adamas University, the H. P. Ghosh Research Centre (Kolkata), and the Netaji Institute For Asian Studies (Kolkata), the conference was attended by His Excellency the Ambassador of Brazil, the Hon’ble Consul-Generals of China and Russia in Kolkata, distinguished Indian diplomats, and leading academics from across the country. The seminar deepened our understanding of BRICS’ evolving significance, its institutional prospects and challenges, and the role that India has played and can play in shaping this geographically and politically diverse coalition that seeks to moderate the entrenched Western dominance in global governance structure. Published at a time when India has assumed the presidency of BRICS, the volume should be of particular interest for India’s reading public as well as its practicing diplomats. For the BRICS as a Group, the collection should provide a critical perspective to chart out an effective path to realise its goal to promote a more inclusive and multipolar global order in the midst of emerging challenges in world politics.
