Poonam Surie has spent the better part of the last thirty five years living across four continents. Her stints in a set of very diverse countries ranging from Tanzania, Belgium, Poland, USA, Bhutan, UK and China have given her a unique perspective and ‘world view’. Having met and observed people from various cultures, backgrounds and ethnicities, she has imbibed different perspectives, often sharing this knowledge through her writing. In recent years, the evolving socio-political dimensions in China have become a special area of interest for her. The author is an Adjunct Fellow at the Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi and Visiting Fellow at the Indian Council of World affairs. Besides writing, education remains a key area of interest. While in Tanzania, as a Fellow of the Indian Council of Historical Research, she wrote a research paper on the Indian Diaspora. Poonam Surie has written over the last 30 years on cultural issues, the diaspora, gender and economic issues. As a columnist for the Financial Express while living in New York, she wrote a column ‘NY Notes’ on issues such as gender, art and culture and subsequently freelanced for a number of Indian newspapers, writing on contemporary issues including a number of travel pieces. Her book of poetry ‘Dancing on a Moonbeam’ (2003, Konark), is about the pulse of life, the angst of women, the partition of India, the loss of loved ones, life in the foreign service, the search for inner peace and the conflict between the old and the new. Her other book, ‘China: A Search for its Soul’ (2009, Konark) deals with ancient links between China and India, the evolving Chinese society today and the return of religion, particularly Buddhism to the country. She has presented academic papers at a number of International conferences. She lives in New Delhi with her husband and two daughters.
