Arunachalam was formerly the Professor and the Head of the Department of Geography, University of Mumbai. An active Member of the Maritime History Society, he has a deep and abiding interest in the history of Indian Cartography, nautical cartography and navigation technology. As the Principal Investigator of CSIR, he carried out research projects on medieval traditions of Indian cartography and Indigenous navigational techniques.
